During their testing phase, the only way to get one is to receive an invitation from someone who already has one. Mine came from a friend of a friend of a friend of a guy who is actually working for Google on the Gmail project. In the coming months, after they have finished testing, they will open it to the public so people can sign up for an account much like they can for Hotmail, Yahoo, etc. Would you be interested in an account to play around with? It's actually a really cool service!

select explanation from friend where inquiry = 'what's going on: invites';

And, actually, no one's replied to my asking if anyone needs invites ... but if someone does, I'll let you know. :)

Thanks.

It used to do with how long you had your account. The exact details haven't really been released, but to try to keep it somewhat closed they may not be handing out invites to these new users like yourself. Is there someone who needs an invite? I'd be happy to send one their way!

Also, I have a friend of a friend of a friend who is working on the Gmail project (talk about degrees of separation!), I will try to get a query into them to see what's going on! Might take a while though.

And I still don't have invites ...

Does it have to do with the volume of mail you've move through the account? I haven't been using it as a primary channel just yet.
