I think I’ve mentioned before that my sister is studying in Rome right now. She wasn’t sure for how long, but has decided to leave at the end of the current semester. I had planned a visit for sometime in the Spring, but that may have to get bumped up to sometime in the next two months if I want to go at all! I found a plane fare on Alitalia for $390 round trip for the end of November. Now all I need is to get my passport renewed (which consequently will end up costing about $150, almost half the price of the plane ticket!). At least this time the passport will be good for 10 years.
So yay, I’m probably going to Italy in a month

My tour guide in Rome said that November is a great time to visit Rome because there aren’t so many tourists and the weather is pretty good. He was a great tour guide.
Try to go wandering down random side streets–even the non-touristy stuff is really cool. There are all kinds of little churches and stuff (very pretty). Also, I would recommend taking all indoors pictures at a very high speed–they frown on flashes. I used 400 speed film and a lot of my pictures failed to come out at all.
But keep your money/passport very close and protected. They have a lot of pickpockets.

It was the dead of summer last time I visited Italy, very hot and humid. Although I’m not a huge fan of cold weather, I think it’ll be a much lovelier time to visit Rome
I’m really excited because I’ve pretty much already seen the touristy stuff, so I can spend the time there as you suggested, roaming the tiny streets and visiting the lesser known sites that my sister has no doubt discovered in the months that she has been there!
And thanks for the tip about the pictures! I had actually forgotten that most places don’t allow flashes.
